# JevPlayer Architecture Specification
**JevPlayer** is a client-side Fabric mod designed for autonomous Minecraft survival gameplay. It integrates **TypeSafe AI's Jev** (a fast, calibrated System-One decision engine) with **Baritone** (the industry-standard pathing and mining actuator) via a zero-allocation, modular architecture.
---
## 1. System Overview & Sense-Decide-Act Cycle
The core runtime operates on an asynchronous **Sense $\to$ Decide $\to$ Act** cycle designed to maintain client-thread responsiveness without dropping frames.

## 2. Multi-Module Project Structure
To decouple Minecraft dependencies and allow cross-version support, the repository is partitioned into a zero-dependency core module and thin versioned adapters:
```
JevPlays/
├── core/ # Pure Java 21/25, ZERO Minecraft dependencies
│ ├── src/main/java/com/typesafe/jevplayer/core/
│ │ ├── action/ # Action catalog (14 actions) & legal action generator
│ │ ├── sim/ # Headless simulated world adapter for unit tests
│ │ ├── state/ # Zero-allocation state snapshots & hash generators
│ │ └── watchdog/ # Stuck detection, loop breaker, death watchdogs
│ └── src/test/java/ # 100% deterministic unit tests (JUnit 5)
├── adapter-1_21_11/ # Fabric Loom module for Minecraft 1.21.11
│ ├── src/main/java/.../ # Concrete WorldSensor, ActionExecutor, InputBridge, HUD
│ └── src/main/java/.../ # ClientModInitializer & Baritone 1.19.0 bridge
└── libs/ # Official Baritone public API jars
```
### Why Multi-Module?
1. **Deterministic Testing:** The `core` module compiles with pure Java and runs entire 10,000-tick simulations in headless unit tests without launching Minecraft or loading native libraries.
2. **Version Independence:** Changes to Minecraft versions (such as the un-obfuscated architecture in 26.x) do not require altering core decision logic, reflex trees, or watchdog rules.
3. **No Code Duplication:** Adapters remain thin shims (typically $< 300$ LOC) that map Minecraft entities, blocks, and keys to core POJOs.
---
## 3. Concurrency & Thread Synchronization
Minecraft runs rendering and client entity updates synchronously on the main thread. Network I/O or blocking waits on that thread cause immediate frame stutter.
### Lock-Free Reference Exchange
```mermaid
sequenceDiagram
participant Main as Client Tick Thread
participant StateRef as AtomicReference<StateSnapshot>
participant DecRef as AtomicReference<JevDecision>
participant Worker as Decision Daemon Worker
participant Jev as TypeSafe AI (System One)
Main->>Main: Sense environment & calculate legal actions
Main->>StateRef: set(latestSnapshot)
StateRef-->>Worker: Poll state
Worker->>Jev: HTTP/2 POST /v1/systemone (70-500ms)
Note over Main: Client renders smoothly at 60+ FPS<br/>Reflexes actively guard player
Jev-->>Worker: HTTP 200 {choice, confidence, urgency}
Worker->>DecRef: set(decision)
DecRef-->>Main: getAndSet(null)
Main->>Main: Actuate Baritone goal
```
- **Thread Confinement:** State reading occurs only on the client thread.
- **Reference Passing:** The decision worker takes an immutable `StateSnapshot`.
- **Preemption:** If an emergency reflex fires while a network query is pending, the reflex takes precedence immediately. When the delayed HTTP response returns, the main thread discards it if the game state has transitioned.
---
## 4. Reflex Engine vs. System-One Jev
| Feature | Reflex Engine (System 0) | TypeSafe Jev (System 1) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Execution Thread** | Client tick thread (synchronous) | Background daemon thread (asynchronous) |
| **Latency** | $< 0.05 \text{ ms}$ | $70 \text{ -- } 500 \text{ ms}$ |
| **Trigger Criteria** | Lava, drowning, fire, point-blank combat, starving | Strategic choices (mining, crafting, exploring, sleeping) |
| **Preemption Power** | Can cancel any active Baritone goal instantly | Subordinate to active reflexes and watchdogs |
| **Failure Mode** | Fail-safe: immediate protective action | Fail-soft: fallback to heuristic rule if confidence $< 0.65$ |
---
## 5. Actuation via Baritone (LGPL-3.0 Compliance)
JevPlayer never modifies, forks, or bundles Baritone source code. All actuation interfaces through `baritone.api.BaritoneAPI`:
- **Pathing:** `BaritoneAPI.getProvider().getPrimaryBaritone().getCustomGoalProcess().setGoalAndPath(new GoalBlock(pos))`
- **Mining:** `BaritoneAPI.getProvider().getPrimaryBaritone().getMineProcess().mineByName(blockName)`
- **Exploration:** `BaritoneAPI.getProvider().getPrimaryBaritone().getExploreProcess().explore(originX, originZ)`
- **Inventory/Crafting:** Executed via standard Minecraft `ClientPlayerInteractionManager` window click packets or Baritone builder process.
---
## 6. Watchdog & Failure Recovery Matrix

# Design Decisions & Recorded Assumptions
This document records the architectural choices, default parameters, and operational assumptions made during the design and implementation of **JevPlayer**.
---
## 1. TypeSafe Jev API & Spend Economics
- **API Endpoint & Protocol:**
- Default URL: `https://api.typesafe.ai/v1/systemone`
- Protocol: HTTP/2 with persistent connection pooling and TLS session resumption.
- Authentication: Bearer token via `Authorization: Bearer <key>`.
- Environment Fallback: `TYPESAFE_AI_API_KEY` is checked if the config field `apiKey` is empty.
- **Model Cost & Spend Cap:**
- Standard pricing model: **$0.042 per 1M input tokens**.
- Token estimation rule: 1 token $\approx$ 4 characters of JSON snapshot prompt.
- Spend Cap Default: `$1.00` per episode run.
- Hard Cap Behavior: When cumulative estimated spend reaches `spendCapUsd`, the system logs a `SpendCapExceededEvent` and transitions seamlessly to `MockProvider` (heuristic fallback) without throwing runtime exceptions or crashing Minecraft.
- **Confidence Calibration:**
- Default Confidence Threshold: `0.65`.
- Any decision returned with confidence $< 0.65$ triggers the fallback selector (selecting the highest confidence option that satisfies current immediate needs such as low health or urgent shelter).
---
## 2. Multi-Threading & Concurrency Model
- **Client Thread Protection:**
- Minecraft's main client render thread must never block on network I/O.
- All calls to `DecisionProvider.query()` run asynchronously in a dedicated cached executor thread pool.
- Target per-tick client overhead: $< 0.3 \text{ ms}$ average, with a hard budget of $< 2.0 \text{ ms}$ for worst-case spikes.
- **State & Decision Synchronization:**
- Synchronization between the main tick thread and the decision background thread is managed via non-blocking `AtomicReference<StateSnapshot>` and `AtomicReference<JevDecision>`.
- While a network query is in-flight (typically 70–500 ms), the bot continues executing its active Baritone goal or holds state.
- **Preemptive Reflex Engine:**
- Synchronous reflex evaluations execute every tick prior to accepting any Jev decision.
- If an emergency is detected (lava submersion, drowning/air $< 4$, burning without water, point-blank hostile damage, starvation $\le 2$ food), reflexes immediately seize control, execute protective actions (e.g. step back, swim up, eat food, sprint dodge), and cancel any obsolete asynchronous goal.
---
## 3. Baritone Integration & Actuation
- **API Boundary & Licensing:**
- Strictly binds to `baritone.api.BaritoneAPI` via public interfaces.
- Zero forking and zero bundling of Baritone source code, fully respecting the LGPL-3.0 license.
- Baritone is loaded as a runtime mod (`modCompileOnly` during build).
- **Legitimacy & Fair Mode:**
- `fairMode=true` by default: sets `BaritoneAPI.getSettings().legitMine.value = true`. The bot only pathfinds to and mines blocks that have been exposed to player sight or are logically discoverable without X-Ray cheats.
- `smoothLook=true` by default: activates cinematic camera interpolation so video recordings appear organic rather than jerky or robotic.
- `allowSprint=true`: enables tactical sprinting during pathfinding and combat flees.
- **Nether Pathfinding:**
- Includes `dev.babbaj:nether-pathfinder:1.6` runtime capability for dimension transitions.
---
## 4. Safety, Watchdogs & Controls
- **Singleplayer Restriction:**
- Automation bots on public servers violate multiplayer fair-play rules.
- `allowMultiplayer=false` is enforced by default. If the player connects to an external multiplayer server, the mod logs a warning and disables autonomous ticking unless the user explicitly overrides `allowMultiplayer: true` in `jevplayer.json`.
- **Instant Kill Switch:**
- Keybinding: `F9` (default MISC category).
- Pressing `F9` immediately sets the internal state to `DISABLED`, cancels all active Baritone processes (`getCustomGoalProcess().isActive()`, `getPathingBehavior().cancelEverything()`), and halts background polling.
- **Watchdog Escalation:**
- **Stuck Watchdog:** Triggers if player position has moved $< 1.5$ blocks over a 45-second sliding window while no inventory changes have occurred. Clears pathing cache, jumps/steps aside, and resets goal.
- **Loop Breaker:** Triggers if the same high-level action fails 3 consecutive times. Blacklists that specific action for 60 seconds to prevent getting trapped in local minima.
- **Death Watchdog:** Detects player death, records the milestone failure, awaits respawn, and resets the goal planner to Phase 1 (gather wood).
---
## 5. Security & Privacy
- **Zero API Key Leakage:**
- The API key is never serialized into plain text in `episode_events.json`, `decision_log.jsonl`, standard Minecraft logs, or rendered on the HUD overlay.
- The method `JevPlayerConfig.getRedactedApiKey()` masks all but the first 7 and last 4 characters (`sk-live_***abcd`).
- No secret keys are stored in version control; `.gitignore` guards all environment and secret files.
---
## 6. HUD & Video Overlay
- **In-Game Overlay:**
- Keybinding: `F8` toggles HUD display on/off.
- Visuals: Clean semi-transparent card rendering current milestone, active Jev action, decision confidence percentage, rolling latency (p50/p95), watchdog state, and cumulative token spend.
- Rendering Throttling: State text formatting is throttled to update at most once every 200 ms to prevent per-frame garbage generation.

# JevPlayer
> **Autonomous Minecraft Survival driven by TypeSafe AI's Jev model through Baritone**

**JevPlayer** is a client-side Fabric mod that enables an autonomous player agent to play Minecraft survival mode from scratch for a full 1-hour episode without human intervention.
- **The Brain:** **Jev** (TypeSafe AI's "System One" decision model). It does not generate text or code; it returns fast (70–500 ms), calibrated typed decisions, confidence ratings, and urgency scores.
- **The Actuator:** **Baritone** (public API). Handles pathfinding, mining, obstacle clearing, and movement physics smoothly.
- **The Engine:** An allocation-light, multi-module core featuring emergency reflexes, watchdog monitoring, a 9-stage milestone ladder, in-game HUD telemetry, and deterministic headless simulation.
---
## Key Features
- **Multi-Version Architecture:** Modular design separates pure game logic (`core`) from versioned Fabric adapters (`adapter-1_21_11`, `adapter-26_1`, `adapter-26_2`).
- **Hybrid System 0 / System 1 Decision Loop:**
- **Reflex Engine (System 0):** Zero-latency ($< 0.05 \text{ ms}$) synchronous emergency reactions for lava, drowning, point-blank combat, and starvation.
- **Jev Model (System 1):** Fast asynchronous strategic choices across 14 high-level survival actions.
- **Mock Mode:** Built-in calibrated heuristic decision engine requiring no API keys or internet connection.
- **Decision Replay:** Replay recorded JSONL decision logs to reproduce runs deterministically.
- **Robust Watchdogs:**
- **Stuck Watchdog:** Detects stationary states ($< 1.5$ blocks moved over 45s without inventory change) and automatically clears pathing and sidesteps.
- **Loop Breaker:** Detects repeated action failures and temporarily blacklists problematic actions.
- **Instant Kill Switch (`F9`):** Immediately relinquishes all control and stops all Baritone processes.
- **In-Game HUD Overlay (`F8`):**
- Displays current action, decision confidence, rolling latency (p50/p95), active watchdog status, and cumulative spend.
- **Enterprise Safety & Privacy:**
- Strict key redaction: API keys are never logged, committed, or rendered in plain text (`sk-live_***abcd`).
- Singleplayer protection: `allowMultiplayer=false` by default prevents accidental activation on public servers.
- Hard spend cap: Gracefully falls back to MockProvider when spend reaches the configured limit ($1.00 default).

---
## Getting Started
### Prerequisites
- **Java Development Kit:** JDK 21+ (JDK 25 recommended)
- **Minecraft Launcher:** Fabric Loader 0.16+ installed for Minecraft 1.21.11
- **Baritone:** Ensure the Baritone Fabric jar is present in your `.minecraft/mods` folder.
### 1. Build the Mod
Clone the repository and build all modules using the Gradle wrapper:
```bash
git clone https://github.com/oiupoyt/JevPlays.git
cd JevPlays
./gradlew build
```
The compiled mod JAR will be located at:
```
adapter-1_21_11/build/libs/adapter-1_21_11-1.0.0.jar
```
### 2. Configure Your API Key
JevPlayer supports two methods for setting the TypeSafe API key:
#### Option A: Environment Variable (Recommended)
```bash
export TYPESAFE_AI_API_KEY="your-actual-api-key-here"
```
#### Option B: Configuration File
Copy `jevplayer.sample.json` into `.minecraft/config/jevplayer.json` and insert your credentials:
```json
{
"apiKey": "your-actual-api-key-here",
"endpoint": "https://api.typesafe.ai/v1/systemone",
"mockMode": false,
"confidenceThreshold": 0.65,
"fairMode": true,
"spendCapUsd": 1.0,
"debugOverlay": true,
"cinematicCamera": true
}
```
*Note: If no API key is found, JevPlayer automatically starts in **Mock Mode**.*
### 3. Launch Development Client
To launch the client directly from Gradle:
```bash
./gradlew :adapter-1_21_11:runClient
```
---
## Controls & Keybindings
| Key | Action | Description |
| :---: | :--- | :--- |
| **`F8`** | **Toggle HUD** | Shows/hides the JevPlayer telemetry card (active milestone, confidence, latency, spend). |
| **`F9`** | **Kill Switch** | Emergency abort. Instantly disengages autonomous ticking and cancels all Baritone goals. |
---
## Configuration Reference
Configuration is loaded from `config/jevplayer.json`:
| Key | Type | Default | Description |
| :--- | :---: | :---: | :--- |
| `apiKey` | `string` | `""` | TypeSafe API key (or set via `TYPESAFE_AI_API_KEY`). |
| `endpoint` | `string` | `https://api.typesafe.ai/v1/systemone` | TypeSafe Jev inference endpoint. |
| `mockMode` | `boolean` | `false` | When `true`, uses the internal heuristic model instead of the cloud API. |
| `confidenceThreshold` | `float` | `0.65` | Minimum confidence score required to accept a Jev decision. |
| `fairMode` | `boolean` | `true` | Enforces `legitMine=true` in Baritone (no X-Ray / cheating perception). |
| `allowMultiplayer` | `boolean` | `false` | Guard against running automation on external servers. |
| `spendCapUsd` | `double` | `1.00` | Maximum spend limit per run before falling back to MockProvider ($0.042/1M tokens). |
| `debugOverlay` | `boolean` | `true` | Enables the in-game HUD overlay. |
| `cinematicCamera` | `boolean` | `true` | Enables `smoothLook=true` in Baritone for video recordings. |
| `hudRefreshRateMs` | `long` | `200` | Telemetry refresh interval to eliminate per-frame GC allocations. |
| `logReplay` | `boolean` | `false` | Replays decisions from a recorded log file. |
| `replayLogPath` | `string` | `decision_log.jsonl` | Path to the recorded JSONL log for replay mode. |
---
## Testing & Simulation
The `core` module includes a deterministic headless simulation engine that runs complete survival loops without launching Minecraft:
```bash
# Run all unit tests, legal action masks, watchdogs, and simulated loops:
./gradlew :core:test
```
### Tested Capabilities
- Legal action masking across health, tool, and environmental states.
- Emergency reflex preemption and watchdog transitions.
- Spend cap tracking and automatic fail-soft fallback.
- Token rate calculations ($0.042 / 1M tokens) and JSON schema validation.
- Recorded decision log parsing and replay fidelity.
---

# JevPlayer Performance Guide & Profiling Protocol
This document details the performance constraints, memory budgets, zero-GC strategies, and profiling protocols used to ensure **JevPlayer** runs stably for extended 1+ hour survival sessions without causing frame drops or memory growth.
---
## 1. Per-Tick Latency Budgets
Minecraft runs at 20 ticks per second (1 tick = 50.0 ms). Rendering at 60+ FPS requires the client thread to complete all per-frame and per-tick tasks within a fraction of this window.
| Pipeline Phase | Target Budget (Average) | Hard Threshold (Worst Case) | Execution Thread |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **World Sensor Perception** | $< 0.15 \text{ ms}$ | $< 0.80 \text{ ms}$ | Client Main Thread |
| **Legal Action Masking** | $< 0.05 \text{ ms}$ | $< 0.20 \text{ ms}$ | Client Main Thread |
| **Reflex Evaluation** | $< 0.03 \text{ ms}$ | $< 0.15 \text{ ms}$ | Client Main Thread |
| **Watchdog Verification** | $< 0.02 \text{ ms}$ | $< 0.10 \text{ ms}$ | Client Main Thread |
| **Actuator Dispatch (Baritone)** | $< 0.05 \text{ ms}$ | $< 0.75 \text{ ms}$ | Client Main Thread |
| **Total Client Tick Overhead** | **$< 0.30 \text{ ms}$** | **$< 2.00 \text{ ms}$** | **Client Main Thread** |
| **Decision Query (Jev HTTP/2)** | $70 \text{ -- } 250 \text{ ms}$ | $< 500 \text{ ms}$ | Background Daemon Thread |
| **Decision Query (Mock Heuristic)** | $< 0.50 \text{ ms}$ | $< 2.00 \text{ ms}$ | Background Daemon Thread |
---
## 2. Allocation Avoidance & Zero-GC Strategies
Frequent garbage collection cycles on the client JVM cause perceptible micro-stuttering. JevPlayer incorporates strict allocation-minimization practices:
### Reusable Buffers for Prompt Formatting
- Instead of creating short-lived `String` instances on every tick, `StateSnapshot` formats its state prompt into pre-allocated `StringBuilder` instances.
- Primitive fields (`float health`, `int food`, `int level`, `long timeOfDay`, `int coalCount`, etc.) are directly formatted without boxed object wrappers (`Integer`, `Float`).
### Bounded Collections & Ring Buffers
- `ActionHistoryEntry` instances are stored in a fixed-size ring buffer (capacity 10). When new history arrives, the oldest entry is overwritten in-place without expanding or reallocating arrays.
- Legal actions use `EnumSet<ActionType>`, backed by a single 64-bit primitive long bitmask. Adding, removing, or checking legal actions requires zero memory allocations.
### HUD Rendering Throttling
- Minecraft invokes HUD rendering callbacks on every frame (60 to 144+ times per second).
- String assembly and metric calculations are throttled to update at most once every `hudRefreshRateMs` (default: 200 ms). Between updates, the HUD simply renders the cached text components.
### Non-Blocking HTTP Client
- All remote I/O is performed using Java's built-in `java.net.http.HttpClient` configured with:
- HTTP/2 multiplexing.
- Connection reuse and TLS session caching.
- A fixed daemon thread pool (`Executors.newSingleThreadExecutor(...)`).
---
## 3. Profiling with Spark
[Spark](https://spark.lucko.me/) is the standard profiler for modern Fabric environments.
### Profiling the Client Thread
To profile JevPlayer's client-side tick footprint in-game:
```text
/spark profile --thread Client --timeout 60
```
When the 60-second profile concludes, inspect the call tree under:
- `net.minecraft.client.MinecraftClient.tick()`
- Look for `com.typesafe.jevplayer` packages.
- Ensure total sampling percentage for `com.typesafe.jevplayer` remains $< 0.5\%$ of client tick time.
### Profiling Memory Allocation Rate
To identify any memory allocations generated by JevPlayer:
```text
/spark heap --alloc
```
Filter classes for `com.typesafe.jevplayer`. Memory allocation rate should be $< 5 \text{ KB/sec}$ during steady-state autonomous play.
---
## 4. Profiling with Java Flight Recorder (JFR)
Java Flight Recorder is built directly into OpenJDK and provides low-overhead JVM diagnostics.
### Launching with JFR Enabled
Add the following JVM argument in the Gradle `runClient` task or Minecraft launcher:
```bash
-XX:+UnlockDiagnosticVMOptions \
-XX:+DebugNonSafepoints \
-XX:StartFlightRecording=dumponexit=true,filename=jevplayer-profile.jfr,settings=profile
```
### Key Metrics to Validate in JDK Mission Control
1. **Garbage Collection Pauses:**
- Verify that young-gen GC pause times remain $< 5 \text{ ms}$.
- Confirm that old-gen full GCs do not occur during a 1-hour session.
2. **Thread Allocations:**
- Filter the "Allocation in new TLAB" and "Allocation outside TLAB" views by `com.typesafe.jevplayer`.
- Confirm that no tick-level allocation loops exist.
3. **Socket I/O:**
- Confirm that all `java.net.http` network activity is confined to the `jev-decision-worker` thread.
---
## 5. One-Hour Soak Test Validation Protocol
Before recording or deploying an episode:
1. Launch singleplayer survival in mock mode:
```json
{
"mockMode": true,
"confidenceThreshold": 0.65,
"fairMode": true
}
```
2. Enable HUD overlay (`F8`) and let the bot play undisturbed for 60 minutes (72,000 game ticks).
3. Verify the following exit criteria:
- **No Out-Of-Memory (OOM):** Heap usage remains flat with normal sawtooth GC reclamation.
- **No Deadlocks:** Worker threads terminate cleanly when leaving world.
- **Watchdog Stability:** If the bot gets stuck in terrain, watchdog recovers within 45 seconds without operator intervention.
- **Kill Switch:** Pressing `F9` immediately releases all Baritone controls and stops autonomous ticking.

# Gradle start up script for POSIX generated by Gradle.
#
# Important for running:
#
# (1) You need a POSIX-compliant shell to run this script. If your /bin/sh is
# noncompliant, but you have some other compliant shell such as ksh or
# bash, then to run this script, type that shell name before the whole
# command line, like:
#
# ksh Gradle
#
# Busybox and similar reduced shells will NOT work, because this script
# requires all of these POSIX shell features:
# * functions;
# * expansions «$var», «${var}», «${var:-default}», «${var+SET}»,
# «${var#prefix}», «${var%suffix}», and «$( cmd )»;
# * compound commands having a testable exit status, especially «case»;
# * various built-in commands including «command», «set», and «ulimit».
#
# Important for patching:
#
# (2) This script targets any POSIX shell, so it avoids extensions provided
# by Bash, Ksh, etc; in particular arrays are avoided.
#
# The "traditional" practice of packing multiple parameters into a
# space-separated string is a well documented source of bugs and security
# problems, so this is (mostly) avoided, by progressively accumulating
# options in "$@", and eventually passing that to Java.
#
# Where the inherited environment variables (DEFAULT_JVM_OPTS, JAVA_OPTS,
# and GRADLE_OPTS) rely on word-splitting, this is performed explicitly;
# see the in-line comments for details.
#
# There are tweaks for specific operating systems such as AIX, CygWin,
# Darwin, MinGW, and NonStop.
#
# (3) This script is generated from the Groovy template
# https://github.com/gradle/gradle/blob/HEAD/platforms/jvm/plugins-application/src/main/resources/org/gradle/api/internal/plugins/unixStartScript.txt
# within the Gradle project.
#
# You can find Gradle at https://github.com/gradle/gradle/.
